El Paso Fire Station 19 – Addition & Renovation
El Paso Fire Station No. 19 has successfully undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation as part of the 2019 City of El Paso Public Safety Bond initiative. Originally constructed in the 1960s, the station’s layout lacked a clear separation between living and equipment spaces.
In a redesign that respected the original Mid-Century Modern aesthetic of the station led by In*Situ Architecture, a concerted effort was made to accommodate equipment and operational strategies that prioritize the safety of fire fighters and maintain a healthy environment. Through the strategic division of the fire station into zones, the design team effectively ensured the separation of contaminants from living areas. The “Hot” (high hazard) areas are kept adjacent to each other, while the “Cold” (low-hazard living areas) spaces are organized into three areas, fitting within the existing footprint with an additional 1,768 square feet. Housed within Fire Station 19 are two interior apparatus bays, covered EMT canopy, a dispatch/workspace, kitchen/dining, sleeping dormitory quarters, locker room, four individual private restrooms/showers, spacious new workout gym with a view, bunker gear, and decontamination area. The site was also completely redesigned to facilitate the safe movement of fire apparatus. By introducing a driveway off of Daugherty Drive, the fire trucks can now enter the site and safely back into the bays without causing disruption to traffic on McRae Boulevard. In essence, the renovated Fire Station No. 19 not only preserves the historic significance of the original structure but also elevates it to meet contemporary standards of functionality, safety, and operational efficiency. As a vital hub for emergency response in the community, the station stands ready to serve, reflecting the city’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of its residents. |
