The Nuestra Senora Housing Development
The Nuestra Senora Housing Development stands as a testament to community transformation and sustainable living. Financed through Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA), this project encompasses an 87,200 SF multifamily residential structure featuring eighty units, with a thoughtful mix of 60 one-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom units spread across four levels.
Designed as an infill project, the development strategically utilizes its urban location, distinct building volumes, and passive solar shading strategies to emphasize sustainability and community revitalization. Open-air corridors reduce conditioned space exclusive to living units, and a community garden encourages resident engagement. In the broader context, the Nuestra Senora Housing Development aspires to be a genuine walkable community. Its strategic location facilitates easy access to markets, shopping, restaurants, health, and office facilities, promoting a lifestyle centered around convenience and accessibility. Nestled in El Paso's uptown district, the development offers short walks to multiple bus routes and two rapid transit system lines, further enhancing connectivity. An existing bus stop on the north end of the property adds to the project's accessibility. Addressing the unique challenges of the West Texas desert environment, the building incorporates thoughtful design elements to mitigate the impact of the sun. Perforated metal awnings at the windows serve to alleviate direct heat gain within the residential units. The L-shape orientation of these awnings varies based on the building's sides, optimizing their performance and ensuring a harmonious blend of environmental responsiveness and architectural ingenuity. |
