PLAZA hotel PIONEER PARK BUILDING HISTORIC REHABILITATION

The historic rehabilitation of the 146,969 SF of the Plaza Hotel Building was a historic tax credit project supported by federal and state tax credits. The Plaza Hotel - built in 1930 as the El Paso Hilton - is perhaps El Paso’s most important Historic Building because of the history that has passed through its doors and because it sits on a Pioneer Park site that is literally the founding point of the city. In addition, the hotel was the last major project designed by Henry Trost to be built before his death.
The building was rehabilitated to continue its original use as a hotel. To re-establish the hotel as the city’s living room with a modern spin — a diverse national design team oversaw the restoration of the hotel’s exterior architecture and key historic interior elements with an emphasis on preserving the authenticity of the original design. Years before the project became active, In*Situ worked with the ownership to test various hotel room configurations in the floor plates. Additionally, In*Situ designed several scenarios for the adjacent parking structure until finding one that worked on the tight site. In*Situ’s principal architect, William Helm, AIA, was instrumental in the early phases of predevelopment, assisting the ownership in selecting and assembling the design team from across the country.
