"Star Ceiling” – El Paso Museum of Arts Foundation
"Star Ceiling" is an exceptional collaborative art project between In*Situ Architecture and renowned artist Leo Villareal, celebrated for his groundbreaking LED light installations. Officially opened to the public on January 17, 2025, the installation transforms the south entrance of the El Paso Museum of Art with an avant-garde LED array.
This visionary project reimagines public space, repurposing on-site structural concrete columns originally designed for the Arts Festival Plaza to support a canopy housing the LED panels. With an investment of $6 million, the installation seamlessly combines architectural ingenuity and artistic brilliance. In*Situ Architecture worked closely with Leo Villareal throughout the analysis, planning, and construction phases to bring this ambitious project to fruition. The centerpiece is a 120-foot LED array featuring 13,500 individually addressable, monochrome, energy-efficient LEDs, arranged in non-repeating patterns that create a unique and immersive experience for every visitor. Beyond its technological innovation, "Star Ceiling" is a spatial masterpiece, offering dynamic environments for art, performance, collaboration, and reflection. It also serves as a solemn tribute to the thousands of lives lost to COVID-19 across the region, providing a space for remembrance and healing. As a completed project, "Star Ceiling" stands as both an artistic landmark and a significant economic stimulus for downtown El Paso-Cd. Juarez. It fosters connection, community gathering, and cultural vibrancy, aligning with In*Situ Architecture's philosophy of creating experience-rich, socially dynamic environments. This extraordinary project invites residents and visitors alike to connect, collaborate, and thrive in a space that celebrates the intersection of art, architecture, and community.
